Lately I have been trying out new palettes. Usually I use the Richard Schmid palette (if you don't already know/use it) of titanium/zinc white, cad. Lemon, cad. Yellow pale, cad. orange (he uses cad. Yellow deep), Yellow Ochre pale, Terra Rosa, cad. red medium, Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Transparent Oxide red, Viridian, Cobalt Blue light, and Ultramarine Deep.
For this one, all I used wuz mixed white as above, Indian yellow, prussian blue and Alizarin permanent. If I had the time, I'd love to do a color chart. I'll post paintings w/ other palettes as I use 'em.

MRIs suck

Ahh, no painting tonight because I had to go get a MRI for my low back. It was an experience that I don't want to do ever again. Being inside that thing was a bit too claustraphobic for my taste and the freaky sounds rattling around caused me to 'get my zen on' and frantically wash my being in wavelets of traquility just to keep my sanity while in the can-o-magnets. Well, I'm sure its better than a lot of other things, and somebody would say I should just be thankful that at least it wasn't the dentist or something.
I don't know if I'll get to paint tomorrow due to a design gig and commission that are on the plate. But they will end soon, I'll be back painting, and all will be right in the world again . . . Art, my drug of choice.

Only a few paintings this week

Due to some unexpected commissions there will only be two posts this week. Despite the good news of the work it turns out to be a real bummer for me because I have greatly enjoyed the painting a day routine and now feel like something is getting neglected. What's really worrisome though, is that I will (hopefully) only miss 3 days -which isn't much in the big scheme of things, but nevertheless seems to add a lot more stress to my life! Ahh well, maybe I'll take some shots of other work and post those instead . . .

Hopefully all will be back to normal on Monday!

When you have kids you find that they can be attracted to little things as though they were toys. This tiny pumpkin is my daughter Emaleigh's, and she picked it out for Halloween. Well, I had an aweful time wrestling it from her so I could paint it. She promptly reclaimed it when I finished.

It seems that often times I find things that have been abandoned or left around too long, like this moldy Lemon I found in the fridge. It's that passage that interests me, it's what makes things real. I have to confess that I have been checking out Jacob Collins art lately, there is a link to the right, make sure you go to the bathroom before clicking on it ;O
I painted this on gessoboard and I really like the surface, It is so different than the homemade panels that I usually paint on. This is nice and even with just a little tooth for the paint to stick -I can't wait to try out some of the other sizes.

Sometimes you just get lucky and find a great object to paint. This is one of those beat up balls you find abandoned in a yard or under some schrubs. It reminded me of when I was a kid and didn't have anything better to do than hunt around and find lost balls just in some woods or at the edges of yards -I loved the excitement of treasure hunting!

I'm fascinated by citrus skin, the fine pores you see in lemons and oranges are really neat to examine and consider against the features of other varieties. This little tangerine had a smooth covering that was a bit loose and almost waxy.

For this one, the idea was to keep the paint as thin as I could for as long as possible. That way, the drawing will be there for me when I start laying it on thick. While not entirely successful, I did get a good painting off and am happy w/ the results.
